Music
Music can teach us about meaning. Music fires the imagination in young minds.”
Nicola Benedetti, violinist and Music Education Ambassador
Music is a subject that we all have in our day to day lives and embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. Music exposes us to cultural and social experiences that may have a profound effect on us in our lifetimes. In our school, music brings us together through the love of fellow students performing and the shared endeavor of the creative process. The curriculum ensures that students build up a repertoire of knowledge and appreciation that they then apply through technical and practical skills across three key areas. This develops their confidence to embrace music whilst gaining a multitude of skills which can be used across different subjects and real-life scenarios.
The musical journey begins with listening. Students review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians. This deepens the student’s understanding of how composers use the elements of music.
Following the listening component, students then learn to perform and/or compose music on their own and with others. They have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
