At Churchdown PE, we aim to give our students the opportunity to enhance and develop their physical skills, knowledge and understanding through participating in a wide range of sporting activities. As a team, we strive for all students to live healthy, active lifestyles and, as such, aim to provide a plethora of opportunities for students of all abilities to thrive. We offer opportunities for students to compete competitively in invasion, net striking, and field games such as football, rugby, netball, basketball and tennis alongside catering for students with a passion for gymnastics, dance and health related fitness. With plenty of sporting venues inside the school available to use such as our first team show pitch, our fitness suite, and indoor and outdoor teaching spaces, we ensure that we place as much emphasis on the physical side of our subject as well as the academic. Our in-school provision is complemented by a wealth of opportunities for cultural enrichment as we strive to ensure students are able to attend live sporting events to both inspire and entertain. We are proud to offer PE at both GCSE and BTEC level at KS4 and this is carried on into our sixth form offer of the BTEC National Course where we are proud to deliver results which sit us in the top 10% of schools nationally. At Churchdown PE, regardless of whether you are an aspiring Olympic athlete, or enjoy skateboarding and hiking, there is a place for you to belong and perform to your potential.

Welcome to Physical Education
The department aims to provide an enjoyable and satisfying programme, which should afford opportunities for every pupil to develop physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. The curriculum offers a comprehensive and inclusive range of learning experiences to meet the needs of individual pupils and tries to encourage active involvement by all as performers, observers and officials.
Through a sympathetic and structured selection of learning experience appropriate to individual needs we aim to support all pupils in the development of physical competence and promote the skills necessary to effectively plan and evaluate movement related activities, safely and with confidence.
Competition, patience, tolerance a sense of fair play and good sporting behaviour are essential elements of any learning process. Through a variety of roles and with shared experiences, pupils will be encouraged to appreciate their own strengths and weaknesses and respond appropriately to the needs of individuals and groups.
It is hoped that the programmes offered across the Key Stages, together with an awareness of leisure opportunities within the community, will develop these skills and abilities required for the pupils to lead a life-long active and healthy lifestyle
KS3 Overview
Across this Key Stage pupils are introduced to key skills and concepts through modified games and play. Emphasis through years 7, 8 and 9 is the development of basic cores skills, how to apply them, and a secure understanding of rules, tactics and strategies used across a wide range of activities. Units are split into half term blocks with rotations in activities every 4 or 5 weeks with 4 lessons a fortnight.
Activities studied at Key Stage 3 include:
Football, Rugby, Basketball, Netball, Fitness, Gymnastics, Dance, Badminton, Table Tennis, Athletics, Rounder's, Tennis, Cricket, Softball, Rugby League, Strength and conditioning, Softball and Outdoor adventure.
KS4 Overview
Across this Key Stage the focus in lessons is lifelong learning and the ability of students to make informed choices about the activities they would like to participate in post education. Students take greater responsibility for their learning as well as developing roles as player, coach, organiser and official across all of the activities studied. Activities are studied over 5 or 6 week blocks and are a mixture of traditional competitive sports and fitness based activities.

For non-GCSE students in Year 11 offer an off-site option during PE lessons which allows students to experience physical activity in the wider community and encourage life-long participation outside of school, this options include visits to Jumptastic trampoline park, GL1 swimming pool, Brickhampton Golf Complex and the Fitness Hub functional centre.
GCSE Physical Education
We are very lucky to have our own PE classroom which aids the delivery of excellent teaching and learning across a full range of examination courses. In years 10 and 11 we successfully run GCSE Physical Education course with over 50 students following these courses in each year group. The examination worth 60% of the course consists of two written papers

Health, fitness and well-being
Students are also required to be assessed across three different sports as performers and to analyse and evaluate their own performance as part of the practical coursework which is worth 40% of the overall qualification
KS5 Overview
BTEC Sport
At Churchdown School 6th form we run BTEC National Sport and Exercise Science .
This is equivalent to the same UCAS points as A levels.
In BTEC students will study four units that are worth 360 units in total. The course is a mixture of coursework and exams based work.
There are 3 compulsory units – Functional Anatomy , Sports and Exercise Psychology and Specialised fitness testing and Coaching for Performance and Fitness.
Extra Curricular Opportunities
There is an extensive extra-curricular and enrichment programme available at the school. Clubs and teams run at lunch and after schools. We have regular fixtures and compete at a local, district, county and national level in a variety of sports. In addition to out of school fixtures we also run termly inter-house matches which are hugely enjoyed by the students and extremely competitive.
Additional enrichment activities also occur with our links to external clubs who offer additional activities for our students as well as the opportunity for students to work with local feeder schools, gain national coaching qualifications and improve they own skills through an integrated Gifted and Talented programme. We also run a sixth form games programme on a Wednesday afternoon and regular curriculum days in which pupils experience a variety of linked subject activities. We organise a range of different trips that inspire and celebrate sport and physical activity this includes dance shows, watching live super league netball, T20 cricket and sports tour (Spain in 2017 and Canada in 2019).
Next steps or Where the subject leads
As well as the ideal preparation for A level PE, GCSE PE allows progression to vocational qualifications such as BTEC Firsts and Nationals in Sport or Sport and Exercise Sciences.
The course develops the transferable skills and key skills that employers are looking for and can lead to a wide variety of employment opportunities. This can include further training in such areas as recreational management, leisure activities, coaching, officiating, the fitness industry and armed forces.
